Welcome to Tasmania – From Devonport to Hobart

I left Melbourne on the 9th December to go to Tasmania. Therefor I took the boat, it was quite expensive. I paid 240 $ for the ticket, I think flying to Tassie it’s half way cheaper. But it was comfortable, easy check in and out, I didn’t had to dismount my bicycle or worried about if it could be damaged. From Devonport I cycled in two days to Launceston. On my first day in Tassie I’ve got a taste of the changeable weather. It changed every ten minutes betweeen rain, sun, clouds and even hail. For Launceston I contaced a warmshowers host. Here I stayed two nights by Vicky and Malcom. Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania with about 80.000 people. I visited the Cataract Gorge and a museum.

On my way to Hobart I wanted to avoid the highway, so I took a longer gravel road, it was very quiet. On the 16th December I arrived in Tasmanias capital. On the cycleway I met my host Jen, whom I contacted before on warmshowers.org and also two friends of Jen. The next day Jen got a full house, two more touring cyclist arrived. I went to the airport in the morning to catch Alex. It was strange for me that I picked up someone else, usually I am the one who is always picked up. Alex and I met eachother 9 months ago in Malaysia and Singapore. He is the only german cyclist that I met on my trip who started from Germany as well. We were very happy to see us again. He arrived with Esther, who was in the same plane. Esther is the first girl that I met who is travalling alone by bicycle. She is from Canada and started her trip 5 months ago. Esther did already 10.000 km, cycled inter alia through Russia and Mongolia, a very brave girl. Alex and Esther got hosted by Jen as well. So we cycled together from the airport back to Jennifers house. We four had a great time together in Hobart. Many thanks to Jen who managed to host us short-term before Christmas.

Alex and I want to stay together in Tasmania till March 2014. We will looking for work and also do some cycling.

I wish all readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
