Bruny Island

I was often dreaming about to find a girl which is cycling with me. Then I met Yen who wanted to come with me on a cycle trip to Bruny Island. We started on the 12th February from Huonville. My bike was heavy loaded with more then 35 kg luggage. Yen carried less then 5 kg. It was her first cycle trip, the longest distance she cycled before was 40 km in one day. On our first day we did 30 km and climbed over a 200 m hill on the way to Cygnet. In Cygnet we met a young couple in front of a supermarket who invited us to their home in Lymington. Ingrid and Blake are planning a cycle trip through Europe this year, so they were very curios about my cycling experience. We had a nice dinner together and camped one night in their garden.

On our second day we reached Bruny Island. On the way we had to climb over 270 m. Yen performed very well. When she went downhill, she did 50 km/h and scared me. Later I asked her why she is going so fast, that’s dangerous. She mentioned, that wasn’t fast for her, in Taiwan she often ride a motorbike, so she is used to that speed. On the jetty in Kerrington we met an Italian couple that we know from our work. They went to Bruny by car and we often met us again on the island per chance. We paid 5 $ each for the ferry. The first night on Bruny we stayed on the Neck, there is a campsite for 5 $ per night and it’s directly at the beach. We did 60 km. So Yen deserved a rest day. After the Neck we went to Adventure Bay where we stayed two nights on the cliffs. Blake and Ingrid told us about this spot. In Adventure Bay was a movie night on Saturday where we went to see My Fair Lady, an 50 years old movie. It was nice to be in a dry place and have some entertainment because it was raining outside.

From Adventure Bay we cycled to Cape Bruny, the southest point on the island. The last 20 km to the cape was on a gravel road. Yen didn’t complain, but I saw that she was very exhausted. The hard way was it worth, we arrived on a nice campsite located at a bay. The sea was quiet and we were alone at the beach, we had the feeling that the time stood still at this place. Later we met the Italian couple Sandra and Rabbi in the campsite and had dinner together.

The way back from Cape Bruny was more easier because we already know what to expect on the way. Near to Alonnah Yen wanted to find a spot for wild camping. I suggested to go back to the Neck, so I was surprised and happy at the same time, that she prefered wild camping. After some searching we found a nice spot direct at the water with a view back to Tasmania. Then we left Bruny on the 18th February. We camped in a park in Woodbridge. From Woodbridge back to Cygnet we climbed over a 400 m hill, it was rainy and on the top we where covered in clouds. After lunch break in Cygnet we cycled to Grove, where Yen parked her car. Here finished our first cycle trip after 270 km.

This time I took pictures with my GoPro Camera only, because I forgot to charge the battery for my SLR before this trip.

[Update 04.03.]
One week after our first cycle trip we rode from Huonville to Hasting Caves and back. On the way we stayed at Chris and Katies home in Surges Bay, where I stayed before with Alex. It was very nice to see Chris, Katie and Jack again. This trip was about 160 km and 4 days long.
